Imagine: You’re pulled from your home in the middle of the night, after witnessing or experiencing a traumatic event.

You are separated from your parents and siblings and are taken to the local department of social services office in your county. You have none of your belongings except the clothes you are wearing. You are left with a case manager that is working hard to care for your needs but is, nonetheless, a stranger. You are given an air mattress to sleep on and left in a cubicle or in a conference room to wait until someone lets you know where you are going from here.

Now imagine having an opportunity to take a shower or change into clean clothes.

You’re brought to a living room space - inside the county DSS building - where you can comfortably curl up under a blanket on a cozy chair or couch. You can unwind with a favorite show, familiar video game, or reading a book. Eventually, the exhaustion will set in, and you can lay down to sleep in a bed with clean linens and soft blanket. When you wake up, you can use the provided Chromebook or tablet to login to school and see familiar faces while not falling behind in your course work.

A Lily Pad is that space. Your own “Soft Place to Land”.

Every day across our nation, children are waiting in offices for placement in a foster home. These children are sleeping on air mattresses on office floors in Department of Social Service buildings.
